If you haven’t seen the new Rotorua Glowworm Caves yet, prepare to be amazed — it’s a world first, and we’re incredibly proud to have been part of its creation! This completely manmade structure is the result of groundbreaking research, development, and engineering to create a safe haven for these magical creatures. It’s a brilliant conservation effort that beautifully combines tourism with protecting our native glowworms. The effect is breathtaking: a ceiling that glimmers like a starry night sky with thousands of tiny blue dots, now open as part of the Redwood Treewalks and perfect for a day out.

Christmas in Aotearoa means long sunny days and warm evenings, which can push ponds to their limits with both algae blooms and overheating. Signs of an overheating pond include fish gasping at the surface, sluggish movement, and water that feels unusually warm, especially in the late afternoon.

Christmas Sea-son’s Wishes

The team will be taking a short Christmas break, with Red Fish Blue Fish closed from 12:00 pm on 19 December and reopening on 5 January.
